Dell DVD Drive and Symantec Endpoint Protection 11.x
We installed Symantec Endpoint Protection for a medium sized company. After the installation the users complained that thier machines would sudennly and randomly reboot, some users thought the problem was their power stip losing power. We looked at the log files on the machine and found no entries other than the normal startup messages. No shutdown or Bluescreen messages. It happend on about 20 of about 200 machines at the site. We worked with Symantec support for several weeks trying to indentify a potential driver conflict. The cusomter had only Dell machines, so we started looking at Dell specific drivers. After contacting Dell They advised us that they had seen a similiar but not identical problem in the past related to the DVD drive bios. So we took one of the rebooting machines and discontected the DVD drive and gave it back to the user. The reboots had stopped. We reboperted this to dell and they informed us that thier could be a bug in the DVD Bios on those machines that are rebooring and they identified the service tags of the machine sthat were owned by the customer that had the same bios. Dell agreed to replace (at dells expense) all of the DVD drives the customer owned that were potentially subject to this bug even if the user did not report the problem. Dell paid for all material and labor to do this.
